Turbolab is looking for its first PhD students!

Turbolab, a new Research & Development platform for innovative aeronautical propulsion. This platform combines the skills of Akira Technologies in the design of innovative propulsion systems and those of ESTIA and Compositadour in advanced materials and processes.

ESTIA is looking for its new PhD students for this new platform:

The subject of the thesis: Design of turbomachinery shafts with controlled damping

The aim of this thesis is to introduce additional degrees of freedom into the design of the shaft line by locally modifying the stiffness and damping coefficients of the structure. Thus, compared with a conventional metal structure, the introduction of the composite would enable the stiffness/density ratio of the structure to be varied and optimised according to the designer's needs. In addition, a local variation in stiffness could have an impact on modal deformations and help to control operating clearances. Finally, the addition of the glue inherent in the construction of a composite structure could introduce additional damping into the system.

The design of this new type of composite/metallic hybrid shaft therefore raises a number of issues and problems that will be addressed in the course of this thesis:

  • Dimensioning of a composite/metallic structure in a severe environment (mechanical, speed, thermal stress)
  • Analysis of rotor dynamics in the case of a composite shaft (modelling and simulation)
  • Design of metal/composite interfaces
  • Partial testing and model recalibration
  • Damage and reliability

The aim of the project is therefore to propose a multi-criteria performance model for assessing the performance of two new driveshaft technologies produced using processes not yet in use :

  • Manufacture of a shaft from a composite core
  • Hybrid manufacture of a shaft using additive manufacturing and composite draping.

Candidate profile:

  • Extensive mechanical training: solid dynamics - rotating machines - turbomachinery.
  • Open-minded.
  • Fluent in French / English.
